Did Michael Rockefeller Really Disappear?

Michael Rockefeller vanished in November 1961, during an expedition in what is today known as Indonesian territory, formerly known as Dutch New Guinea.

Sixty years since his disappearance has left many still trying to figure out exactly what happened to Michael Rockefeller.

A Brief History About Michael Rockefeller

michael rockefeller

Michael Clark Rockefeller (1938-?) was the fourth of five children born to New York’s Governor at that time and U.S. Vice President, Nelson A. Rockefeller.

From early age Michael had a strong affinity for Anthropology and Native American Art. In 1961, Michael went to New Guinea to document and collect Asmat tribal art.

Michael was very interested in studying the culture and traditions of the Asmat people through their tribal carvings.

The area of New Guinea that Michael chose to explore would be quite far from civilization with many limitations on communication and travel.

How Did Michael Rockefeller Disappear?

On November 17, 1961, Michael Rockefeller and Dutch anthropologist rene wasing were on a boat trip along the southern coast of New Guinea.

They ended up over turned after becoming caught in the rough waves.

Michael and rene clung to their damaged vessel for a while. Eventually, michael decided he would swim toward shore for help. His famous final words were reported as: “i think i can make it.”

Rene was later rescued; however, michael was never seen again.

The Search for Michael Rockefeller

The search was an all-hands-on-deck effort that included aircraft, boats, local guides and many other resources.

Despite a massive search effort by rescuers in multiple locations around the world; there were no confirmed signs of Michael being found to be alive.

Michael’s family has been searching for answers to this same question.

A large amount of international media coverage occurred due to Michael’s famous family as well as the mysterious nature of what happened after Michael went into the ocean.

What Happened to Michael Rockefeller?

Several theories have evolved in recent years.

One possible theory is that Michael drowned. Since he had already been adrift, attempting to swim back to land against heavy seas (he swam a long way) would be very unsafe.

Other possibilities are based upon claims that Michael made it to shore but was killed by members of an Asmat community.

For many years, there were rumors of this possibility and they often came from reports from local people or later investigators who interviewed them.

Additionally, some of the reported killings included claims that evidence of his body was hidden.

Although some claimants have claimed that their version of events are true, none have provided sufficient evidence to prove that he did survive.

Why Is the Michael Rockefeller Mystery Still Unsolved?

The mystery remains unsolved; the current evidence is too ambiguous to provide a clear resolution to this mystery.

When Michael went missing it was in a very rural area at a time when there was much less access to communications and searches technologies then are available now.

In addition to those limitations, the environment itself had extreme difficulties (such as dense jungle), making it very difficult for outside investigators to confirm what happened in such remote areas.

Finally, since no physical evidence of Michael’s death was found, many competing theories still exist.

Claims that the Asmat people killed Michael can only be considered theories or hypotheses; similarly, claims that Michael survived have not been independently verified.

Did Michael Rockefeller Really Disappear?

Yes, Michael Rockefeller went missing in 1961 and has been lost. It is unknown what happened to him that led to his death.

Although there are many theories as to why Michael Rockefeller’s body was never recovered or identified, the official written history of the event does not provide a singularly supported explanation.

As such, drowning can be considered a possible explanation; however, reports of Michael Rockefeller having reached land alive but being subsequently murdered contribute greatly to the continued uncertainty surrounding this event.

Final Thoughts

Michael Rockefeller went on an exploration to find out about New Guinea’s culture. His adventure instead turned into one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the 20th Century.

Since his disappearance, many have looked for him, investigated, speculated for decades— but there is still no end to his last chapter.

Was Michael Rockefeller just missing? It is true he was missing with no sign that anyone knew where he was —but perhaps we will never know how or why he vanished.
